Hotel Moscow
Hotel Moscow is located in St. Petersburg, near Alexander Nevsky Square and the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. Hotel Moscow is an old, Soviet style hotel that has recently been renovated. Moscow hotel is one of Saint Petersburg’s largest hotels. It was built in 1973 and consists of over 750 rooms. The hotel was originally one of the Intourist St Petersburg hotels. These were hotels that foreign guests were allowed to stay in as opposed to regular Russian hotels where Soviet citizens stayed. Moscow hotel also had a Beriozka shop. This was a special type of store that existed in Soviet times that sold goods for hard currency only as opposed to roubles. The goods in the hotel Moscow Beriozka were all of Western make and could not be purchased in regular Russian stores. The Moscow hotel and all Intourist hotels at that time (including any hotel in Moscow or hotel in Saint Petersburg) had a type of apartheid policy. Only foreigners were into the hotel Moscow unless the Russian was a very important person (an artist, entertainer, sports figure, etc.). People were stopped and checked at the door.
I remember my cadet friend Artyom asking me to purchase 2 cans of beer at the Moscow hotelsBeriozka to give to his girlfriend for her Birthday. Artyom probably drank the beer himself!!! What a jerk! Besides a Beriozka, the Moscow hotel had a bar on the basement level full of drunk Finns, Russian prostitutes, foreign students and the like. That was the perestroika period.

I spent New Years of 1991 in the Moscow hotels restaurant. I had a really great time. We had a huge banquet in the hotel’s restaurant. The first floor was taken up by foreign tourists (both young and old – at that time, there was a lot of interest in the Soviet Union so not only retired people toured St. Petersburg – or… Leningrad). I sat on the 2nd floor, balcony level of the hotel Moscow restaurant. There, mainly black marketers and high class Russian prostitutes were celebrating. It was really a funny scene – tourists below, crazy people above. My friend Andrei was a famous black marketer at the time and he had introduced me to a lot of these people. Andrei now sells cars in South Carolina!!! Anyway, there was also a table at the hotel Moscow on the 2nd floor full of drunk Finns – already passed out at 19:00 on December 31st from too much drink! A great time was had by all. Spending that New Year's in St. Petersburg was better than spending it at any of the Moscow hotels. The next morning, Andrei’s girlfriend Lily dropped by my place on ulitsa Plexhanova (now Kazanskaya) and delivered me a loaf of bread – this was the height of the deficit period and there were real bread shortages in the city around New Years – wow! I am serious, the stores were full of beets and vermicelli!!! My friend Tanya served me a 5 course meal all composed of different dishes made from beets! No joke. Anyway, I was very happy and this is enough about the hotel Moscow. Don’t stay there! There are better places, just search the site.
