Putin turns 60

Russian President turns 60!

Undoubtedly Russia's most famous person for the past decade and current Presdient, Vladimir Putin, celebrated his 60th birthday on Sunday Oct. 7th.

Putin was reelected as president for another six years in March elections that were widely protested by opposition groups. Previously Putin, who is a former KGB officier, came to the political lime light in 1999 when he became Prime Minister under Boris Yeltsin. After two years of being Prime Minister Putin became the President in 2000 and held the office for two terms until 2008 when he gave up the office to Dimitry Medvedev, his hand picked successor. Medvedev in turn made Putin Prime Minister for the next four years until he could legally become president again. Now Putin will lead the country for a six year term instead of the previous 4 year term due to a change in the law.

Putin has enjoyed much love from the Russian people through his 13 years in power, but lately his ratings have fallen and a strong opposition has taken root. But nonetheless Putin remains the main figure of Rusian polticis for the foreseable future.

Several leaders sent their gifts and congratulations to Mr. Putin. While Putin himself spent his birthday at home in St. Petersburg with friends and family.
