Kazan hosts International Graffiti Festival
The city of Kazan is currently hosting the first international graffiti festival. The festival is the first of its kind, bringing together 47 of the world's best graffiti artists from 15 different countries to take part in the event.
Graffiti has long been popular in Russia and on any visit to a large Russian city you are bound to see some intricate graffiti art throught the urban area. Russia's tradition with the arts and its production of such creative and talented artists makes for some splendid graffiti and streat art.
The city of Kazan has agreed to allow the participants of the festival to paint 40 facilities around the city, including structures such as buildings, fences, bridges and so on. All in all the government has allocatd around 10,000 square meters of space to paint and even contributed some cranes for the artists to use.
Kazan has recently been hosting many cultural events and the city, which is predominatly Muslim, has risen as one of Russia's most popular cities. In 2012, Kazan will host the World Student Games.
As a part of the festival, open master classes will be help for the public, as well as lectures by some of the world best graffiti artists and of an exhibition of the winning and most popular works.
Kazan has realized the importance of using artistic talent and aknowledged that art takes unconvential forms, such as graffiti, and is proud to decorate parts of the city with such artwork. At least it will keep the talented graffiti artists from painting unwanted places by giving them a large canvas to work.
