New Pulkovo Terminal
Pulkovo Construction On Schedule to be Completed Next Year
St. Petersburg's Pulkovo airport is currently undergoing large scale construction on a new terminal, which contractors say is going according to schedule. The estimated completion date is sometime by the end of next year.
Pulkovo desperately needed this long overdue project. The current airport has one terminal for international flights and a seperate terminal, which is not connected by any form of public transportation, for domestic flights.
The new terminal when completed will be a 3 story 94,600 square meter complex. According to Northern Capital Gatewy consortium, the airport's operator, the first floor will be for arrivals, the second floor for immigration/passport control and domestic transfers, and the third floor for departures.
In addition, and 11,000 square meter Northern Landing Gallery for international flights will be built where the former Rossiya Airlines building stood. The project also calls for the building of a multistory parking complex, a business center and a hotel.
Originally, the plan was also to buld a railway line from Pulkovo to the Baltisky Railway Station, but this has temporarily been postponed until 2014 according to Sergei Emdin, general director of the Northern Capital Gateway consortium.
When the project is completed, large scale plans to remodel the Pulkovo 1 terminal are planned to begin in 2014.
Hopefully in a few years when you land in St. Petersburg you will feel like you've landed in a modern European airport, not one from Soviet times.
